Overview
BetterMuse processes MIDI input on your device and does not record the audio of your playing. Imported score files, freehand ink, and keyboard calibration stay on your device. When iCloud is available, selected practice data syncs through your private Apple iCloud database so it can appear on your other devices.
Data We Collect
The BetterMuse app processes the following data:
- MIDI input from your connected keyboard or digital piano
- Practice results, timestamps, durations, goals, and saved drills, which may sync through iCloud
- Note-naming preferences and imported-score library metadata, which may sync through iCloud
- Imported MusicXML, MXL, PDF, and MIDI source files, which stay on your device
- Freehand ink, markings, MIDI calibration, and audio-route calibration, which stay on your device
- Coarse product events such as onboarding completion, import success, practice-session completion, paywall views, and subscription status
- A random installation identifier used to connect those events across app launches without creating a BetterMuse account
- Apple Ads attribution, when available: campaign, ad group, keyword, and ad identifiers, plus whether a download followed an ad tap or view
Data We Do Not Collect
- Location data
- Audio recordings of your playing
- Payment card details
- Score names, imported files, annotations, or notes played in product analytics
- Detailed accuracy, timing, dynamics, or other musical-performance data in product analytics
Third-Party Services
The app uses Apple's AdServices to measure advertising for BetterMuse on the App Store. A temporary token is sent to our server and exchanged with Apple for an attribution result. We do not store the token or send it to our analytics service. We connect the result to our random installation identifier to understand whether ads lead to practice and subscriptions. We do not collect the advertising identifier (IDFA), fingerprint your device, or track you across other companies' apps or websites. Coarse app and website events are stored in BetterMuse's self-hosted OpenPanel analytics service and used to understand product use, setup and purchase problems, and advertising effectiveness. We do not retain the campaign country or ad interaction timestamps returned by Apple. If you use iCloud sync, Apple handles the storage and transport for synced app data. Payment processing is handled by Apple through the App Store.
Data Storage & Security
Local data is stored using standard iOS storage mechanisms. Synced data is stored by Apple in the private CloudKit database associated with your Apple ID. BetterMuse does not operate a separate account system for app data. Product analytics is sent through a restricted BetterMuse endpoint that rejects unknown events and properties before forwarding accepted events to the self-hosted analytics service. Your device backups may also contain BetterMuse data according to your iCloud backup settings.
Children's Privacy
BetterMuse does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. The app has no BetterMuse account system. Data that syncs is stored through the user's Apple ID and private iCloud database.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
